Brown County officials warn of open waters on area lakes and rivers

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office is the latest to warn of dangerous ice conditions on area lakes and rivers.

There have been several reports over the last week of vehicles, ATVs, and snowmobiles falling through the ice in south-central Minnesota, and officials say there are currently thin ice and open water conditions on many local area lakes and rivers in Brown County. They include Lake Hanska near Godahl point and Geiger landing, the Minnesota River near the highway 14/15 bridge construction, and various points along the Cottonwood and Little Cottonwood Rivers.

In addition to testing the ice thickness before driving on it, deputies say anyone planning to venture out on the ice should be sure to tell someone where they are going and when they expect to return.
